DAKAR, Senegal: Senegalese legislators Monday voted to delay a presidential vote due to take place this month until December 15, according to media reports.
The president of the National Assembly announced that lawmakers had endorsed the measure, after several opposition deputies were forcibly removed from the chamber by police.
Earlier, Senegalese lawmakers got physical as they debated the unprecedented move to postpone this year’s presidential election, also sparking clashes outside parliament and sparking international concern.
Tempers in the parliament chamber were close to boiling point by early afternoon, with some MPs pushing and shoving each other, leading to a temporary adjournment.
Outside, security forces earlier used tear gas to disperse small groups of opposition protesters, with protesters chanting “dictator Macky Sall”, a reference to the country’s president.
