MEXICO CITY: At least seven people were killed and several others injured after the roof of a church collapsed during a service in Mexico on Sunday, Western media reported.

A spokesperson for the Tamaulipas state government in a statement confirmed the death of seven people saying 10 others were injured in the incident in the town of Ciudad Madero.

Footage on social media showed the moment the church roof collapsed. After the roof fell off gray smoke can be seen in the air, followed by the toppling of yellow brick outer walls.

The civil protection body for Tamaulipas state, which borders US Texas state, published photos of the remains of the church and said its workers were searching for survivors under the rubble.

Mexican media reported that a child had also been killed in the tragic incident.
