Severe Cold Spell in Punjab Likely to Continue for Five More Days

ISLAMABAD: The ongoing spell of severe cold throughout Punjab will conclude in another five days as clouds will likely grip the environment by the 29th of December to reduce the weather’s cooling effect.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) sources said the upcoming cloudy weather would neutralize foggy spell from the province, which has increased its thickness at present, a major cause behind the ongoing cold spell in the region.

They added that there were high chances of the absence of cold weather during December had there not been thick fog in the province. According to them, the duration of a cold spell would reduce after five days despite the continuity of the severity of the weather.

Today’s weather

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (MET) has forecast dry and cold weather is likely to be in most parts of the country, while, cold in north Balochistan and northern areas and during next 24 hours.

Foggy condition

Dense foggy conditions are likely to pravail over Punjab, upper Sindh, and plain areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Fog is likely to occur at isolated places in the Pothohar region and Kashmir during morning hours.

As per the synoptic situation, continental air is prevailing over most parts of the country.

Air quality

The air quality in Lahore is 172 US AQI; in Bahawalpur, it is 168, 170 in Muridke, 158 in Rawalpindi, and 168 in Sialkot. In Sindh, the air quality in Karachi is 183 US AQI,224 in Mirpur Khas, while Islamabad’s air quality stands at 171. In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, air quality is 266 in Peshawar and 119 in Abbottabad. 

Recorded temperatures

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (Met), a maximum of 2 degrees Celsius (°C) temperature was recorded in Islamabad, 8°C in Lahore, 11°C in Karachi, and 2°C in Peshawar, -3.5 °C in Quetta and -5.5°C in Gilgit.
