BEIJING: The southwestern city of Chongqing in China is grappling with heavy rains and severe flooding that have resulted in at least 15 fatalities, with thousands of people being displaced. The surge in extreme weather conditions is believed to be a consequence of climate change, leading to acute thunderstorms and extreme conditions in various countries worldwide.
China, the world’s second most populous country, has been facing the wrath of exceptional weather patterns, including record temperatures and scorching hot days, causing distress among its population.
President Xi Jinping has instructed authorities to intensify efforts in safeguarding the public from the impacts of extreme weather, as individuals are forced to evacuate their homes due to the flooding.
In Chongqing, a sprawling city, floods have necessitated the relocation of thousands of residents, while bridges have been destroyed and cars swept away by the deluge.
According to official reports, 15 individuals have lost their lives in recent days, with four individuals still missing as of early Wednesday, as stated by Chinese broadcaster Xinhua News.
As per Xinhua, the current heavy rainfall has disrupted the lives of over 130,000 people and inflicted damage to more than 7,500 hectares of crops.
Floods Cause Economic Losses in China
In the Wanzhou district, located northeast of Chongqing, the floods have resulted in economic losses amounting to 227.8 million yuan ($31.5 million), as reported by state media CCTV.
Videos circulating on social media depict rivers raging through towns and cities, while individuals are being evacuated through waist-deep water. One video shows rescuers breaking through a window to reach people trapped in a residential apartment.
President Xi has demanded that authorities prioritize the safety of people and property at all levels. He asked the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, along with concerned ministries, to enhance coordination and warnings, Xinhua reported.
To aid in disaster relief efforts, including those in Chongqing, the finance and emergency management ministries have allocated 320 million yuan in emergency funds, as announced.
The Ministry of Water Resources has started flood emergency responses for the Inner Mongolia region and Jilin, Liaoning, and Heilongjiang provinces, CCTV reported. These areas are expected to experience heavy rainfall on Wednesday, as stated by state media.
The severe flooding and extreme weather conditions in China serve as a stark reminder of the growing challenges posed by climate change and the urgent need for effective mitigation and adaptation measures.
