NEW DELHI: Women’s Premier League (WPL) match between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals, Shabnim Ismail of Mumbai Indians bowled the fastest delivery in women’s cricket on Tuesday, clocking at 132.1kph. The thunderbolt struck the pads of Delhi Capitals’ captain, Meg Lanning, during the second ball of the third over. Though the lbw appeal was dismissed, Ismail, aged 35, secured her place in history as the first woman to surpass the 130kph mark, as confirmed by the International Cricket Council.

Notably, Ismail already holds the record for the fastest delivery in women’s international cricket, achieved in 2016 against West Indies, clocking at 128kph. Despite this milestone, Ismail, who retired from international cricket last year, expressed dissatisfaction with her overall performance against Delhi, conceding 46 runs in four overs, contributing to Mumbai’s loss by 29 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Reflecting on her achievement, Ismail admitted she was initially unaware of the speed of her delivery, as she refrains from looking at the big screen while bowling. Disappointed with her bowling performance, she credited Delhi Capitals for their excellent play.

Jhulan Goswami, Mumbai’s bowling coach and former India quick, echoed Ismail’s sentiments, revealing his own surprise at her record-breaking delivery. However, he emphasized that as long as Ismail maintains her form and accuracy, her expensive spell is of little concern, allowing her to continue enjoying her game.
