ISLAMABAD: Sunday marks a pivotal moment in Pakistan’s political landscape as the nation awaits the selection of its new prime minister.

In a session of the National Assembly chaired by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, Shahbaz Sharif and Umar Ayub stand as contenders for the coveted position.

The process of electing the prime minister entails a division-based voting system, with members allocated to designated galleries before casting their ballots. Once registered, members proceed to their assigned galleries, and upon completion, the tallying process commences.

Earlier, both prime ministerial candidates, Shehbaz Sharif and Umar Ayub, had their nomination papers validated. Despite objections raised by Umar Ayub, the candidacy of Shehbaz Sharif was upheld, paving the way for a head-to-head contest.

Following the general elections held on February 8, no single party secured a simple majority, leading the Pakistan Muslim League-N and allied parties to forge a coalition government. With the support of the Pakistan Peoples Party, MQM, and Balochistan Awami Party, Shahbaz Sharif emerges as the unanimous choice for prime minister.

As the nation awaits the outcome of Sunday’s proceedings, the decision will not only shape the future leadership of Pakistan but also influence its trajectory on the global stage.
