LAHORE: Former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz senior leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has slammed the establishment, saying it was a problem in itself and not part of the solution.

He also sought upholding the supremacy of the law and the constitution, reported Geo News on Sunday. Speaking at a special session on day second of the Lahore Literature Festival at Alhamra Hall here, the former PM reiterated the significance of ensuring supremacy of the constitution, noting, “The constitution exists in the country but it’s high time its supremacy was established.”

Blasting the establishment, the PML-N senior leader said that corrupt individuals are more acceptable for the establishment than those with exemplary character and integrity. He also said that everyone, including the establishment, must come together to resolve political issues urgently as delays wouldn’t be in the interest of the country.

Khaqan Abbasi held that Pakistan had only four leaders in its political history: Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto, Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on economic crisis

Referring to the economic crisis and current political impasse in the country, Abbasi said that the current political system was ill-equipped to face the challenges. Considering perks and privileges, the federal employees are inclined to be posted in the provinces, he added. It is the sole discretion of the people to decide who should be in the parliament. But reality is the other way around as 50 percent of the senators make their way into the Senate by buying their seats,” he stressed.

The PML-N leader said it is a known fact that the establishment and the judiciary influence politics in the country, adding, “But, it’s time everyone work together to ensure the supremacy of the constitution and the law.”
