Sherry Rehman Warns of Urban Flooding in Punjab

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman said on Thursday that the new monsoon spell starting today will bring heavy rains and thunderstorms in different parts of the country which could result in urban flooding in low-lying areas.

Taking to Twitter, Sherry Rehman said that the new spell in country was likely to continue until 17 July and all relevant departments and institutions have been directed to remain vigilant.

She said that ‘from 13 to 17 July, there is an urban flooding risk in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, and Lahore due to heavy rainfall.

She further said that there is an alert of expected landslides in hilly parts such as Murree, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Galiyat, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

NDMA denies risk of urban flooding

Earlier in the day, NDMA tweeted that there was no risk of flooding due to rains in the coming few days.

However its chairman has instructed relevant dpartments to remain alert and closely monitor the water reservoirs and to transfer the populations under potential threat to safe places in time.
