Shoaib Hashmi Death Anniversary Today

LAHORE: The 1st death anniversary of famous veteran playwright, actor and Professor Shoaib Hashmi is being observed today (on Wednesday).

His multifaceted legacy as a forward-thinking playwright, devoted educator, and empathetic artist continues to serve as a wellspring of inspiration for generations to come.

During the 1970s, Shoaib Hashmi left an indelible mark with his acclaimed works both as a writer and performer. Among his notable dramas were ‘Akkar Bakkar’, ‘Sach Gup’, ‘Taal Matol’, and ‘Balila’. Additionally, in 1990, he penned a regular column titled ‘Taal Matol’ in a newspaper, showcasing his literary prowess.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Shoaib Hashmi was honored with the best performance award in 1995 and was also conferred the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz. His academic journey saw him completing his Masters of Arts in Economics from Government College (now Government College University), Lahore, followed by an MSc degree from the London School of Economics (LSE). He further honed his craft in theater at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, London.

Beyond his artistic prowess, Professor Hashmi was known for his comedic brilliance in the 1970s and his tenure teaching economics at GCU, Lahore, and Lahore School for Economics. He was revered not only for his creative talents but also for his remarkable warmth, humility, and affection for others.

Always approachable to students, he could often be spotted on campus, leisurely strolling with a cigarette in hand, surrounded by a devoted group of learners.

Shoaib Hashmi’s departure on May 15, 2023, at the age of 84, leaves behind a rich tapestry of work that will be cherished by the theatre community and those who admire his intellectual contributions.

In recognition of his invaluable service, he was bestowed with the Pride of Performance and the Medal of Excellence.
