NEW YORK: Thousands of Sikh community representatives staged a protest demonstration in front of the United Nations Headquarters in New York to strongly condemn the assassination of the Khalistan leader in Canada and also press their demand for Khalistan as an independent Sikh country, western media reported on Thursday.

Sikhs Hold Protest at UN HQ Against India Over Nijjar’s Assassination

The protest demonstration was held a week after Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the country’s parliament that Canadian authorities had seen “credible allegations” that India was responsible for the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Sikh leader in Canada, AP reported.

The protestors chanted slogans to condemn India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and called for punishing the culprits of Nijjar’s killing.  The protest was organized by the Sikh Youth of America.

The Khalistan movement got new momentum following the revelations by Prime Minister Trudeau erupting the Sikh community’s protest demonstrations before India’s diplomatic missions and across the globe.

“Wanted Modi Hindu Terrorist; India is responsible for terrorism in Canada; India is killing Sikhs; New Delhi Committed Genocide of Sikhs; Free Punjab; India Quit Punjab; End Indian Occupation” were among the slogans inscribed on the placards held by the protest demonstrators, AP reported.

The protestors also held yellow flags marked with the word “Khalistan” and stepped on India’s flag to vent their hatred against India accused of the persecution of religious minorities, AP maintained.
