KARACHI: Sindh has reported two additional polio cases amid a growing outbreak of the virus in Pakistan. A reference laboratory at the National Institute of Health in Islamabad confirmed that the wild poliovirus type-1 (WPV1) cases: one in a girl from Sindh’s Sanghar district and another in a boy from Mirpur Khas district, as per the Pakistani polio program.
These new cases bring the total nationwide to 39 this year. “These are the first polio cases reported from Mirpur Khas and Sanghar this year,” the program stated. “Sanghar borders Mirpur Khas, where several environmental samples have tested positive for WPV1 since April, showing ongoing virus circulation in the area.”
Health officials have confirmed 20 polio cases in Balochistan, 12 in Sindh, five in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and one each in Punjab and Islamabad this year, according to the statement.
