KARACHI: The Sindh Government announced plans to provide free electricity to consumers using up to 100 units per month.
The decision was revealed during a meeting on solarisation, chaired by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, with Energy Minister Nasir Hussain Shah presenting the agenda.
Chief Minister Shah acknowledged public concern over high electricity costs, noting, “Wherever I go, people talk about expensive electricity.”
He stressed the government’s commitment to aiding approximately 2 million households in Sindh by offering relief to those consuming up to 100 units per month, as directed by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
Shah also announced the launch of a new power generation and distribution company in Sindh. He instructed officials to expedite negotiations with the World Bank for support and tasked the Energy Department with preparing a report on generating affordable electricity from Thar coal.
Energy Minister Nasir Hussain Shah revealed that, in the first phase, 500,000 off-grid homes out of 2.6 million in Sindh would receive solar home systems.
Chief Minister Shah assured that proposals would be reviewed and approved by the cabinet to ensure these initiatives are implemented effectively.
