ISLAMABAD/SINGAPORE:

Security officials in Singapore detained an 18-year-old, accusing him of supporting an Islamic State group and planning to carry out attacks.

According to the AFP, the Singaporean student, identified as Muhammad Irfan Danyal bin Mohamad Nor, was detained in December 2022 under the Security Act, without being allowed for trial for up to two years.

Authorities said he became radicalized after viewing the Islamic State group propaganda online. They said that the student wanted to use social media to gather fighters to conduct attacks in Singapore.

Planning Attacks on City

Authorities said his plans included recruiting a suicide car bomber to attack an army camp and bombing a grave site.

K Shanmugam, Minister for Law and Home Affairs, said that at the time of arrest, “he was determined to commit violence.”

In 2020, authorities detained a 16-year-old who they said planned to attack two mosques in the country after being influenced by the massacre of Muslim worshippers in New Zealand.

The following year, a 20-year-old Singaporean Muslim was arrested under the same law, and authorities accused him of planning the deadly stabbing spree against Jews at a synagogue.
