MELBOURNE, Australia: Jannik Sinner retained his Australian Open title in style on Sunday, delivering a commanding 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 victory over Alexander Zverev.
This win not only marked a significant milestone for Italian tennis but also left Zverev reeling after suffering his third defeat in a Grand Slam final.
As the world number one, Sinner made history as Italy’s first player to clinch three Grand Slam titles, surpassing the achievements of Nicola Pietrangeli, who captured back-to-back men’s titles at Roland Garros in 1959 and 1960.

A year after triumphing over Daniil Medvedev in a dramatic five-set showdown for his inaugural major trophy, Sinner brought an air of control to this year’s final, applying relentless pressure and executing his shots with precision.

In the iconic Rod Laver Arena, he seized the crucial break in the sixth game, capitalizing when Zverev sent a forehand sailing long. The German’s resilience seemed to wane following an unfortunate net cord that tilted the second-set tiebreak in Sinner’s favour.
Zverev squandered a match point with a forehand that strayed well wide, allowing Sinner to conclude the match with a stunning backhand passing shot.

With his arms raised in victory, Sinner celebrated by climbing into the stands to embrace his team.
Meanwhile, Zverev’s quest for his first Grand Slam title continues, having previously finished as runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at last year’s French Open and having been defeated by Dominic Thiem in the 2020 U.S. Open.
