KVIY: Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that the situation on the eastern front was getting tougher as Russia continues sending troops into the battlefield to break down Ukrainian defences.

Zelenskyy’s comments came on Saturday as Russian strikes continued in the eastern Donetsk region while nearly 500,000 homes were left without electricity in the southern region of Odesa after an accident at a power plant.

Nightly video address by Zelenskyy

In his nightly video address, Zelenskyy said: “I have often had to say the situation at the front is tough, and is getting tougher, and it’s that time again,” adding that Moscow was putting more and more of its forces into breaking down Ukrainian defences.

The situation was challenging in Bakhmut, Lyman, Vuhledar and other directions, he added.

Russian forces, who are pushing for a significant battlefield victory following months of setbacks, have been attempting to take over the town of Bakhmut and the nearby coal-mining city of Vuhledar, which also lies in eastern Donetsk.

Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Malyar earlier wrote on Telegram that Russian efforts to breach the defences in Bakhmut and Lyman had failed.

Lyman, located just to the north of Bakhmut, was recaptured by Ukrainian forces in October.
