SJC Assents Iqbal Hameed ur Rehman’s Appointment as FSC CJ

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) approved Justice (retd) Iqbal Hameed ur Rehman’s appointment as Chief Justice (CJ) of the Federal Shariat Court (FSC) on Monday.

The appointment was approved at an SJC meeting chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial.

SJC forwards decision to parliamentary committee

According to sources, the SJC forwarded the appointment decision to the parliamentary committee for final approval.

Justice Rehman, the son of famed Chief Justice of Pakistan Hamoodur Rehman, served as a senior apex Court judge from February 24, 2013, to October 24, 2016, before being appointed as FSC CJ. He resigned from his position as a Supreme Court justice in 2016.

Before that, Iqbal Hameed ur Rehman was the Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) from January 3, 2011, to

February 22, 2013, after being nominated by then-Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gillani.

His father, CJP Hamoodur Rehman, rose to prominence after writing the “Hamoodur Rehman Commission Report,” analyzing Pakistan’s political-military involvement in East Pakistan from 1947 to 1971.
