BRATISLAVA: The coalition government in Slovakia has lost a vote of no confidence in the country’s parliament, and it could lead to early polls in the EU country. MPs passed the no-confidence motion against the government of Prime Minister Eduard Heger.

Formation of the new government

78 MPs in the 150-member parliament voted to reject the three-party government of Prime Minister Eduard Heger on Thursday. This shows political instability as Slovakia battles soaring energy prices and a weakening economy. The vote of no confidence was started by Heger’s former ally Richard Sulik. The development came 90 days after the coalition lost its majority in the parliament.

Despite Today’s no-confidence vote, under the constitution of the country, Slovakia can be led by the present government until the President appoints new ministers. However, soon after the no-confidence motion, the speaker of the parliament said he would argue for early polls in the country. He said that early polls could be held in May or June.

The center-right government of the EU country won the 2020 general elections on an anti-corruption campaign. The next parliamentary polls are due in February 2024 as per the normal electoral timetable.
