AMSTERDAM: Dozens of flights to and from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport were cancelled on Sunday due to expected snowfall in the Netherlands. Schiphol’s website indicated the cancellation of nearly 150 incoming and outgoing flights around midday.

Dutch airline KLM, a primary user of the airport, confirmed the cancellation of 65 European flights in the afternoon and evening.

The weather conditions also led to travel chaos in Cumbria, where a major incident was declared by Cumbria Police due to treacherous snowy conditions affecting drivers in the South Lakes area, particularly in Bowness and Grizedale.

Precautionary Measures at Airports After Snowfall Warning

Residents were urged to drive only if necessary, and a yellow weather warning for snow and ice was issued for various regions in the UK.

East Midlands Airport took the precautionary measure of closing its runway in the morning in response to heavy snowfall.

Superintendent Andy Wilkinson of Cumbria Constabulary emphasized the collaborative efforts of agencies to address the impact of heavy snowfall on roads. He urged people to travel only when necessary, highlighting the challenging road conditions exacerbated by forecasted cold temperatures.
