ISLAMABAD: Sara Ahmad, Chairperson of the Child Protection and Welfare Bureau, on Friday emphasized a social boycott awareness campaign to control rising cases of child labour in domestic work, which remained a widespread but hidden phenomenon worldwide, including in Pakistan.

She said during an interview with a Private news channel. “Social advocacy has a crucial long-term role in raising awareness about child labor.”

She stressed, “The media, government, and non-governmental organizations have an important function to identify and bring to public attention problems of child exploitation in our society.”

She added that a social media boycott might compel companies to take measures to protect children and that we should have strict policies and inform families about the precautions they should take.

“Young people should find social media valuable, and we want to ensure we are doing our utmost to ensure their safety,” she added. Responding to a query, she said, “Child domestic labor is one of the most pressing child rights issues in our country, yet it is also the most neglected one.”

She added, “Let all come together with CPWB and say no to child domestic labor.” Sara Ahmad encouraged the provincial governments to pass legislation to eliminate child labor in the home and expand the number of protective agencies for children’s wellbeing.

“Education is a central element to tackling child labor, especially the education of women and girls,” she added. —APP
