Son of Niger’s Ousted President Released on Bail: Officials

NIAMEY: Salem Bazoum, the son of Niger deposed president Mohamed Bazoum was released on bail, Niamey military tribunal said.

AFP reported that Salem Bazoum was given “release” on bail after having been held with his parents since the military took power on July 26, 2023 in the African nation.  According to the document it was “up to him to reply to justice immediately as he is needed to do so”. Salem Bazoum’s parents remain in custody of the military at the presidential house.

Sources said that Salem Bazoum had left the country’s capital Niamey for Lome, the capital of Togo, where he arrived last night.

A statement by the Togolese authorities confirmed an agreement for Bazoum’s release after mediation from Sierra Leone and Togo, but provide no information about his whereabouts.

Niger has been ruled by military regime since the overthrow of elected president Bazoum, which prompted global condemnation.

Military leader General Abdourahamane Tiani has said his government wants up 3 years for a transition back to a civilian government.

Togo is among several West African nations which have been involved in mediation with the Nigerien military government.

Earlier, Togo Foreign Minister Robert Dussey was in Niamey, Niger where he met with Niger’s prime minister, local media reported.

This followed a visit by Dussey in mid-December, when he claimed he had reached a deal “on the content and timing of the transition” with the PM.
