Sotheby’s Will Host Series of Talks at Islamic Arts Biennale in Jeddah

DUBAI: British auction house Sotheby’s will host a series of dialogues at Diriyah Biennale Foundation’s inaugural Islamic Arts Biennale in Jeddah. The series will be held from March 4 to March 13.

Sotheby’s is hosting four-panel discussions and talks led by the auction house’s experts in the field of art. The topics will span from the innumerable influences of Islamic art on the modern jewelry-production industry to the most important movements in Arab art today.

The partnership follows on from Sotheby’s support of the Diriyah Biennale Foundation’s first current art biennale in presenting the 1st Digital Arts Forum and NFT display in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) in February 2022.

Chairman of Sotheby’s Middle East Edward Gibbs said Sotheby’s has a long history of supporting cultural programs in the Arab world – reinforced by a promise to educational outreach and varying cultural enterprises.

The chairman added that they are excited to have joined the Diriyah Biennale Foundation for a 2nd time, following their support of the KSA’s first contemporary art biennale in 2022, continuing to share their expertise in this particular area.

Alexandra Roy, Sotheby’s chief of sale for 20th Century Art / Middle East is going to host a talk “ A Day in the Life of a Specialist” on March 4.  Gibbs’s talk “The History of Collecting Islamic Art” will be held on  March 7.  Sophie Stevens will also discuss “Indian and Islamic Influences and the rebirth of Egyptomania in 20th Century Jewelry Design” on March 7. Sophie Stevens will explore the role of Islamic and Mughal art in jewelry.

Sotheby’s Middle East chief of sales Mai Eldib will also give a historical overview of modern and contemporary Arab art on March 13.
