WASHINGTON: Foreign minister of South Africa on Tuesday accused Israel of setting an example for leaders to defy the top court of the UN.

South Africa has filed a case before the International Court of Justice alleging Israeli for committing a genocide in the war started on October 7.

Naledi Pandor, South Africa’s foreign minister, on Tuesday said Israel had defied a January ruling of the ICJ that it should prevent acts of genocide during war in the Gaza Strip.

Pandor during a visit to US capital Washington said Israel has completely ignored the provisional steps. She said the world is witnessing mass starvation and famine in Gaza.

She added that Israel’s actions mean that there is a license to do what they want and will not be stopped.

The foreign minister said the ICJ has not been respected. She noted that the day Africans disrespect the UN top court they have to listen that as you’re an African, you are expected to obey.

South Africa has again moved the court in The Hague to order actions against Israel to stop widespread starvation triggered by its Gaza military offensive.

A UN-backed food security assessment has warned that Gaza is facing imminent famine, with around 1.1 million people facing catastrophic hunger.
