JOHANNESBURG: South Africa won the toss and elected to field first against Pakistan in the third and final ODI at The Wanderers Stadium on Sunday.
Despite already securing the series with a 2-0 lead, Pakistan, led by Mohammad Rizwan, are determined to finish the series on a high note before shifting focus to the upcoming two-match Test series starting December 26.
The Proteas, under captain Temba Bavuma, are eyeing a consolation win after struggling in the earlier games. South Africa’s preparations were hampered by a setback as fast bowler Bartman was ruled out of the squad due to a knee injury.
Pakistan made changes to their playing XI, bringing in Mohammad Hasnain, Sufiyan Muqeem, and Tayyab Tahir, while pacer Haris Rauf and spinner Abrar Ahmed were rested.
In the second ODI, Pakistan showcased a dominant performance to secure an 81-run victory. Batting first, the visitors posted a challenging 329/7, thanks to a solid top-order contribution and a late blitz by Kamran Ghulam, who smashed an unbeaten 63 off just 32 balls.
South Africa, chasing 330, started steadily but faltered against Pakistan’s lethal bowling attack. Shaheen Afridi delivered a match-winning spell, claiming four wickets, including the crucial dismissals of David Miller and Marco Jansen.
Naseem Shah and Abrar Ahmed provided valuable support, with three and two wickets each. Despite Heinrich Klaasen’s valiant 97, South Africa fell short, bowled out for 248.
Kamran Ghulam was named Player of the Match for his impactful innings, which proved decisive in setting up Pakistan’s win.
The third ODI promises to be an exciting contest. The pitch, initially covered due to rain, is expected to offer balanced conditions for both batters and bowlers.
