SEOUL: Thousands of well-wishers gathered on Wednesday to bid a fond farewell to Fu Bao, the first giant panda born in South Korea, as she embarked on a journey to China. Fu Bao, whose name translates to “treasure that gives happiness,” captured the hearts of millions during her time at the Everland amusement park, where she became a beloved celebrity.

Fu Bao’s departure marks the end of an era in South Korea, where she gained widespread popularity since her birth in 2020. Adored by both locals and visitors alike, Fu Bao’s presence at Everland drew millions of visitors to the park, with her videos on the zoo’s YouTube channel amassing a staggering 500 million views.

The departure ceremony was a bittersweet moment for many, as Fu Bao bid farewell to her adoring fans before embarking on her journey to China. Accompanied by zookeeper Kang Cheol-won, affectionately known as the pandas’ “grandpa,” Fu Bao left Everland in a specially designed non-vibrating vehicle, ensuring her comfort and safety throughout the journey.

Fu Bao’s departure symbolizes the end of a chapter in South Korea’s panda diplomacy with China. Gifted to South Korea by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2016, Fu Bao’s parents, Ai Bao and Le Bao, were part of China’s efforts to foster goodwill and strengthen bilateral relations through panda diplomacy.

While Fu Bao’s departure evokes a sense of loss for many in South Korea, her legacy will endure through the memories and joy she brought to millions during her time at Everland. As she embarks on this new chapter of her life, Fu Bao will forever hold a special place in the hearts of her fans, both in South Korea and beyond.
