South Korea, US Hold “Tabletop” Drill on Possible North Korea Nuclear Threat

WASHINGTON: The US and South Korea conducted a “tabletop” drill at the Pentagon on the possible nuclear threat from North Korea, Washington and Seoul said on Thursday.

A joint statement issued by the two sides said, “Given the DPRK’s aggressive nuclear plan and developments in nuclear abilities, the South Korea and the US delegations “focused their talks on alliance deterrence in order to maintain stability and peace on the Peninsula and possible options for responding to DPRK nuclear arms use,”

The statement added that the North Korea and the US affirmed that the alliance stands ready to respond to the North Korea’s nuclear threats.

According to AFP, the delegations, which were made up of defense, army, South Korea’s foreign ministry and the US State Department officials, conducted the drill on Wednesday, the same day as separate exercises by Seoul, Washington, and Tokyo in the Sea of Japan.

South Korea’s defense ministry added that the drills were conducted with an emphasis on “sharing ballistic missile target information, tracking, and interception procedures.

Similarly, on Thursday, the South Korean and the US delegations also visited a submarine base in Georgia.

North Korea also test fired at least 4 strategic cruise missiles into the sea, state media reported, saying that the exercise demonstrated the readiness of North Korea’s “nuclear combat force.”
