JUBA: Six journalists in South Sudan have been arrested after a video surfaced appearing to show president Salva Kiir wetting himself.

The video was widely shared last month and showed a dark stain spreading down South Sudan President Salva Kiir’s trousers and a wet patch forming on the floor as he stood for the national anthem.

South Sudan’s national journalists’ union said those arrested work for the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) were detained on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Widely shared video

They are suspected of knowing how the footage was released, said national journalists’ union president Patrick Oyet.

Patrick Oyet named them camera operators Mustafa Osman and Joseph Oliver, video editor Victor Lado; contributor Jacob Benjamin; and Cherbek Ruben and Joval Toombe from the control room.

“We are concerned because those arrested now have stayed longer than the law states,” Mr Oyet added.

The law in South Sudan states that people should be detained for a maximum of 24 hours before seeing a judge.
