PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil: Southern Brazil is facing a renewed threat of flooding as river levels surge once again due to relentless rainfall, exacerbating the devastation caused by two weeks of continuous downpours.

With 145 people already dead and hundreds of thousands displaced from their homes, residents of Rio Grande do Sul are grappling with the grim prospect of more misery from the latest deluge.

The state authorities issued warnings as practically all major rivers in the region showed signs of rising water levels, heightening the probability of further flooding across most areas. Civil defense officials reported 132 people missing and over 619,000 forced to evacuate their residences, intensifying ongoing rescue operations.

In the inundated city of Porto Alegre, streets resemble waterways with furniture and belongings floating in muddy waters, while submerged cars line roads in other towns. Residents are struggling to cope with the aftermath, with houses damaged, dead animals strewn about, and neighborhoods submerged.

The situation is described as critical, with concerns mounting over the potential exacerbation of flooding if rainfall persists. The Guaiba estuary, which reached historic levels earlier in May, is once again swelling, posing a significant risk to surrounding areas.

Warnings have been issued for towns along the Taquari River, particularly Mucum, which is still recovering from a devastating cyclone last September. Meanwhile, Pelotas is facing an escalating crisis, prompting calls for the evacuation of vulnerable areas.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva extended solidarity to the affected communities, assuring them of government support. A pledge of $10 billion for reconstruction efforts underscores the magnitude of the disaster and the urgent need for assistance in Rio Grande do Sul.

Despite the challenges ahead, the resilience and solidarity of the Brazilian people shine through as they confront this natural calamity with courage and determination.
