MADRID, Spain: Spain has firmly denied claims by Venezuela that Madrid was involved in a plot to destabilize its government, following the arrest of foreign nationals accused of such actions.

A source from Spain’s foreign ministry stated that Spain “categorically rejects any insinuation” of involvement in the alleged operation.

Two Spaniards were among those detained, but the Spanish government confirmed they were not part of any state body, including its CNI spy agency. Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello claimed the foreigners were part of a plan to target President Nicolás Maduro. The accusations link intelligence agencies from Spain and the US, as well as Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.

The US State Department also denied any involvement in a plot to overthrow Maduro. These arrests follow heightened tensions surrounding Venezuela’s disputed July 28 election, which the opposition claims Maduro manipulated.
