BAGHDAD: Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed unwavering support for Iraq’s “sovereignty and stability” during his visit to Baghdad on Thursday. The commitment was reiterated during a press conference held jointly with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani.
Sanchez emphasized Spain’s dedication to supporting Iraq’s unity and stability. Currently, Spain has over 300 soldiers deployed as part of an international coalition and NATO’s mission in Iraq, under the command of Spanish General Jose Antonio Aguero Martinez since May.
The coalition, focused on countering the Islamic State group, has faced an increase in attacks since the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict on October 7. Many of these attacks have been claimed by groups opposing Israel.
Highlighting Spain’s longstanding commitment to multilateralism, Sanchez underscored the country’s dedication to Iraq over the years. Despite various challenges, Spain remains steadfast in its support.
Attacks on US and Coalition Forces in Iraq
The recent escalation in tensions in Iraq, linked to the conflict between Israel and Hamas, has resulted in increased attacks against coalition troops. Since mid-October, more than 100 drone and rocket attacks have been documented by Washington against US and coalition forces in Iraq and neighboring Syria.
The majority of these attacks have been claimed by resistance groups in Iraq, a group opposing US support for Israel in its conflict with Hamas.
Accompanied by a delegation of business leaders, Sanchez expressed a commitment to fostering trade relations between Spain and Iraq. Iraq, heavily reliant on oil and gas for over 90% of its income, stands as a key partner in Spain’s efforts to enhance economic ties in the region.
