WASHINGTON, USA: Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called on Western nations to avoid “double standards” regarding the Gaza conflict while supporting Ukraine, during NATO’s 75th anniversary summit in Washington on Wednesday.

Sanchez, whose government has recognized a Palestinian state, criticized Israel’s actions against Hamas and stressed the importance of consistent political positions.

“If we are telling our people that we are supporting Ukraine because we are defending international law, this is the same to what we have to do toward Gaza,” Sanchez stated. He urged for efforts to halt the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and proposed an international peace conference to advocate for a Palestinian state. Sanchez emphasized the necessity of an immediate ceasefire, warning of potential escalation to Lebanon.

In addition, Sanchez reiterated his support for “democracy, freedom, and the right to exist of a country such as Ukraine.” NATO leaders at the summit declared that Kyiv is on an “irreversible” path to join the alliance.
