WASHINGTON: US Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday appointed a special counsel to investigate US President Joe Biden‘s classified documents found at his home.

BBC reported that former official of Justice Department Robert Hur will lead the probe into the classified documents.  According to the White House the US President will completely cooperate with the investigation.

US President’s Classified Documents

US Attorney General Merrick Garland said a second batch of documents were located on December, 20 at Biden’s home in Wilmington, Delaware. Merrick Garland said that Biden’s attorneys called investigators to notify them of an additional material, also found at Biden’s private home.

After an initial investigation by US Attorney John Lausch, Garland said that his office decided that a special counsel was required to probe into Biden’s handling of the materials due to the “extraordinary circumstances” of the issue.

Robert Hur said that he will probe the matter with impartial, fair, and dispassionate judgement.

The discovery of the classified documents has been called a political humiliation for Biden, as it comes during an ongoing probe into Donald Trump’s own alleged mishandling of classified materials.

The first batch of documents were found on 2nd November at the Penn Biden Center, a think-tank US President Biden launched in Washington. President Biden said that the materials were handed over to the US National Archives.
