RIYADH: Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has made a move to Saudi Arabia, signing a deal to become the head coach of Al-Ettifaq. The 43-year-old football icon has been out of the game since his dismissal from Aston Villa in October.

Despite previously turning down an offer to head to the Gulf state, Gerrard has now been enticed by the lucrative opportunities available. Al-Ettifaq announced the appointment on Twitter, stating, “Where legends are found. We’re thrilled to announce Steven Gerrard is our new head coach.”

In the previous season, Al-Ettifaq finished seventh among 16 clubs in the Saudi Pro League. The league, backed by the nation’s sovereign wealth fund, has been successful in attracting prominent names from major European leagues by offering substantial salaries. The trend began with Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Al Nassr in January.

Football Stars Moving to Saudi Arabia

Joining the ranks of star players transitioning to Saudi Arabia, Gerrard follows in the footsteps of his former Real Madrid teammate Karim Benzema and French World Cup winner N’Golo Kante of Chelsea, both of whom recently joined Al-Ittihad. Additionally, renowned coaches such as former Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo and ex-Benfica boss Jorge Jesus have also made their way to Saudi Arabia.

Following his retirement from a successful playing career, Gerrard achieved notable success during his tenure as the manager of Scottish giants Rangers. Under his guidance, Rangers secured the club’s first league title in the past 12 years during the 2020/21 season.
