BERLIN, Germany: In a recent revelation, a prominent German MEP, David McAllister, has highlighted the significant hurdles stemming from strained relations between France and Germany within the European Union (EU). McAllister, the Chair of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee and a key figure in the opposition Christian Democrats party expressed concerns regarding the palpable lack of communication and coordination between Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany and President Emmanuel Macron of France. This breakdown in communication is impacting crucial EU decisions, ranging from defence deals in Ukraine to trade agreements, notably with Latin America.

McAllister emphasized that the traditionally influential Franco-German relationship, often seen as a driving force behind the EU, is currently experiencing a notable lack of internal coordination, adversely affecting key decisions in the EU. He underlined that while the Franco-German partnership is not the sole pillar of the European landscape, its cooperation remains pivotal for the EU’s effective functioning.

Critically, McAllister cited instances where this strained relationship has hampered decision-making processes, including the development of the next-generation European battle tank, a crucial element for combat systems in conflict zones like Ukraine. He also highlighted the lack of progress in critical areas such as the development of future aircraft and a trade deal with the Mercosur bloc of Latin American countries.

Pointing to a glaring oversight in a recent speech by the German leader, McAllister reiterated the necessity of strong Franco-German collaboration, especially in areas of defence and security. He stressed that France, as a leading military force in Europe, is an indispensable partner for shaping the EU’s defence and security strategies.

McAllister called attention to the fruitful relationship built by Chancellor Angela Merkel over 16 years with four French presidents, which underscored her recognition as the de facto leader of the EU. He concluded by highlighting the urgency for Paris and Berlin to re-establish effective cooperation, ensuring a smoother decision-making process and advancing critical EU matters.
