BEIRUT: A stray dog was found carrying a newborn baby girl in a trash bag through the streets of Tripoli, in Lebanon on Wednesday, sparking shock across the impoverished country.
A passerby saw the dog carrying the bag and heard a baby’s cries. He managed to take the bag from the dog and was surprised to found the child inside. The infant, who had injuries all over her body, was shifted to the Islamic Charity Hospital (ICH), then taken to the Tripoli Governmental Hospital (TGH) after security services and judicial authorities were informed.
The baby is believed to be only a few hours old, according to Arab News.
The baby’s condition was described as serious but stable and the hospital did not provide any further information.
Authorities are investigating the matter. After recovery, if no one offers to adopt the baby she would be placed in an orphanage and the public prosecutor would be informed.
The Union of Relief and Development Associations’s representative in Tripoli Abdulrahman Darwish said that he does not believe the disturbing incident had anything to do with the Syrian refugee community in in the country.
He said that over 9 nine years, such an incident in the the Syrian refugee camps has not been witnessed.
Physical abuse of children sparks anger in Lebanon
The discovery of the baby girl comes just days after reports of the physical abuse of kids at a daycare center in Mount Lebanon sparked anger across the country. The incident was highlighted after a cleaner at the facility made videos of the abuse and sent the videos to parents of the children. Police issued arrest warrants for the owner of the business and an employee.
