PORTLAND: An perilous Arctic cold front is set to persistently traverse the United States on Monday and endure until at least midweek.

This will extend a frigid spell that has already established record-low temperatures in various regions, posing a significant threat to daily routines. Notably, an NFL playoff game and Iowa’s first-in-the-nation presidential nominating contest are at risk of disruption.

The National Weather Service has warned that wind chills could drive temperatures to a bone-chilling 34 degrees below zero Celsius, spanning from the Northern Rockies to northern Kansas and into Iowa. This extreme cold will put the resilience of caucus-goers to the test as they brave the intense chill on Monday.

“You can’t sit home,” former President Donald Trump told supporters Sunday. “If you’re sick as a dog, you say, ‘Darling, I gotta make it.’ Even if you vote and then pass away, it’s worth it.”

Arctic storms claimed a toll of at least four lives, plunged tens of thousands in the Northwest into darkness by disrupting electricity, blanketed the South in snow, and unleashed blizzard conditions in the Northeast.

The severe weather forced the postponement of the NFL playoff game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills, originally set to take place in the bone-chilling Buffalo, New York. The game, initially slated for Sunday, was rescheduled for Monday. Buffalo native and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul shared a video on X (formerly Twitter), showcasing near-whiteout conditions in the region.
