Sudan: Warring parties agree to extend ceasefire

According to the Saudi Press Agency, Saudi Arabia and the US announced that on May 29, 2023, in Jeddah, representatives of the Sudan Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) inked a five-day extension to the May 20 deal on a Short-Term truce and Humanitarian arrangements in order to give more time for humanitarian workers and organizations to undertake their essential work.

The warring sides avowed their intent to use the five-day extension to executive provisions of the 1st truce that were not completely accomplished, including further provision of humanitarian help, facilitation of vital services repair, and withdrawal of armed men from health facilities. The facilitators denounced continued attacks, airstrikes, and prohibited actions, asking that the warring parties honor their responsibilities to refrain from those actions during the extended ceasefire.

Warring parties in Sudan agreed to discuss a longer-term truce that could entail vacating troops from cities, including civilian homes, further removal of obstructions to the free movement of public and humanitarian help, and enabling public servants to restart their regular jobs, Saudi Press Agency reported.

Riyadh and Washington remind the warring parties that it remains obligatory on them to adhere to their responsibilities under the May 20 short-term truce deal and the preceding Declaration of Commitment to Protect the Civilians in the crisis-hit Sudan.
