CAIRO: Sudan’s Army Chief General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan on Tuesday visited Egypt on his first visit abroad after the outbreak of war in April, as the recent violence killed dozens of civilians in battle-scarred Darfur, Arab media reported.

Arab News stated that General Burhan held dialogues with Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Alamein during his stay in Cairo.

President El-Sisi reiterated his country’s intention to stand by Sudan and support its stability, security, territorial integrity, and unity, the spokesman for the presidency said.

“President El-Sisi affirmed that Cairo holds in high esteem its historical bonds and deep ties with Sudan at every level,” he added.

Earlier, Arab media quoted medics and witnesses as saying that 39 civilians including women and children have been killed in shelling in Nyala, where fighting between the paramilitary forces and the army has intensified.

The fighting between the two rival generals has raged since April 15. General Al-Burhan flew from Port Sudan to Egypt and said his troops faced “rebels who have carried out war crimes in their attempt to grab power.”

He said: “I was keen to brief Egypt’s leadership on the current situation in Sudan, and we ask the global world to look at the war accurately. The war (has) affected all people in Sudan, and we pursue to put an end to the conflict.”

He stressed that “the army of Sudan is dedicated to establishing a transitional time, after which the people of the country can establish their state and select who will rule it.”

President El-Sisi and General Al-Burhan discussed probable cooperation and coordination to help the people of Sudan— particularly via humanitarian aid and relief — so the country can safely address the current issue.

On the occasion, General Al-Burhan lauded Egypt’s support for helping to preserve the stability and safety of Sudan.
