ISTANBUL: Sudan’s army chief and de-facto leader, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan son, Mohammed Fattah al-Burhan Rahmane, died in hospital on Friday two months after he was severely injured in a road accident in Turkiye.
Mohammed was riding his motorbike when he collided with a utility vehicle in Ankara on March 6, resulting in severe injuries. He was taken to a Turkish hospital where, despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries while in intensive care.
The tragic incident comes amidst a brutal conflict between the Sudanese army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, led by his ex-deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.
This conflict has ravaged Sudan for over a year, claiming tens of thousands of lives and displacing millions, leading to what the United Nations has described as the “largest displacement crisis in the world.”
The loss of Mohammed underscores the personal toll of such conflicts, adding to the already dire humanitarian situation in Sudan.
In a separate incident in November last year, the son of Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was involved in a fatal car accident in Turkiye, highlighting the risks associated with road travel.
Mohammed, the son of Somalia’s president, was found guilty by a Turkish court of causing death by negligence when the car he was driving collided with a motorbike delivery man in Istanbul.
Yunus Emre Gocer, a father of two children, died in hospital six days later.
Despite these tragedies, Turkiye continues to maintain close ties with both Sudan and Somalia, offering economic and military support to both nations.
