GENEVA: Sudan’s warring parties have arrived in Geneva, for UN-brokered Negotiations that started on Thursday aimed at “possible local truce” to facilitate humanitarian assistance and protect civilians, a UN spokesperson stated.

The conflict in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023, has forced around ten million people from their homes, sparked warnings of starvation and waves of ethnically driven violence blamed largely on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

A UN spokesperson says that the talks seek to identify avenues for advancement of the identified humanitarian and protection of civilian steps through possible local ceasefires.  The spokesperson said that the Sudanese regular army and RSF will hold talks through mediators in the “proximity talks” rather than of meeting face to face.

US envoy to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield told a TV channel that US Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello was also involved in the Geneva Dialogue aimed at “how to resolve the humanitarian situation, how to get help to those in need, and how to find a political settlement to bring the two sides together.”
