HAI PHONG: Super Typhoon Yagi wreaked havoc in northern Vietnam on Saturday, causing widespread destruction that resulted in at least four fatalities.

The storm uprooted thousands of trees, swept ships and boats out to sea, and tore roofs off houses. It struck Vietnam’s Hai Phong and Quang Ninh provinces with winds exceeding 149 kilometers (92 miles) per hour, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

The death toll in Vietnam includes three residents of Quang Ninh, killed by flying debris, and a man in Hai Duong province who was killed when a tree fell on him. Additionally, more than a dozen sailors are missing, believed to be from fishing boats caught in the storm.

“It’s been years since I’ve seen a typhoon this severe,” said Tran Thi Hoa, a 48-year-old from Hai Phong. “It was terrifying. I stayed indoors and locked all my windows, but the wind and rain were overwhelming.”

Hai Phong streets were littered with fallen trees, metal roofing, and broken signboards. Yagi previously caused significant damage in Southern China and the Philippines, where it killed at least 24 people and injured dozens more.
