BEIRUT: In a recent development, a Syrian youth suspected of orchestrating a deadly attack in Damascus in July met a tragic end after he jumped from a building during a security operation in Beirut.

According to Lebanese media sources and a security insider, the 23-year-old, who hailed from Syria’s Al-Tal region, had illegally crossed into Lebanon and taken refuge with his relatives in the Al-Salam area, situated in the southern suburb of Beirut.

The unfolding events paint a vivid picture of the young man’s demise. It was during a raid conducted by members of the Hezbollah group that the suspect, having discovered that his location had been compromised, made a fateful decision. Faced with the realization that his whereabouts were no longer hidden, he chose to jump from the seventh floor of the building. Following the plunge, he was promptly transported to St. George Hospital; however, his injuries proved fatal, resulting in his demise.

The security insider elaborated that this operation did not end solely with the suspect’s death. Two of his relatives were apprehended during the course of the raid, thereby expanding the scope of the investigation into potential links and accomplices associated with the attack.

The backdrop to this tragic incident dates back to July 27 when an explosion rocked the vicinity of the Sayeda Zeinab shrine, a city located to the south of the Syrian capital, Damascus. The blast, caused by a bomb concealed within a vehicle, resulted in multiple fatalities and left several others wounded. Syrian state media reported on the incident, shedding light on the severity of the attack.

Subsequent to the explosion, the extremist group Daesh claimed responsibility for the devastating act on the following day. Their assertion thrust the incident into the international spotlight and emphasized the continuing threat of such groups in the region.
