According to Reuters, New York Police Department identified a suspect as Trevor Bickford, 19, of Wells, Maine, and police said in an email on Monday that he was charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of attempted assault.

Further information on future proceedings have not been immediately shared by the police.

The authorities has not commented on the attack’s motivation, but the Times reported that a suspect was driven by terrorism. A newspaper quoted an unnamed senior law enforcement official who said Bickford might face extremism charges later.

The Times said Bickford was converted to Islam sometime in the previous year and a half.

Police said Bickford had traveled to New York from his Maine home on Saturday.

One of the three police officers who had been attacked and who had recently graduated from the Police Academy suffered a fractured skull, the authorities said. Police said that one of the officers shot the suspect, hitting him in the shoulder. The suspect was then taken into custody.
