ANKARA: Turkish security forces have arrested a Kosovan citizen accused of managing the financial network of Israel’s notorious Mossad intelligence agency in the country.
According to the Turkish intelligence agency MIT, on Tuesday, Liridon Rexhepi was arrested in Istanbul on August 30, suspected of transferring funds to Mossad personnel operating in Turkiye.
Turkiye, which has condemned Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip, has this year detained more than 20 people suspected of having links to Mossad.
Rexhepi had been under surveillance since his entry into Turkiye on August 25, the MIT said in the statement. He is alleged to have facilitated funds transfers from eastern European states, primarily Kosovo, to Mossad agents in Turkiye.
The statement further added the funds transferred by Rexhepi were reportedly used for intelligence meetings in Syria, conducting psychological operations against Palestinians, and coordinating drone-related operations.
Rexhepi used different money transfer services to bring funds into Turkiye. Turkish media reported that the funds were later distributed to field operatives who, in turn, channelled some of the money to assets in Syria.
