ISLAMABAD/ANKARA: Thousands of people offered to adopt a baby girl born under the debris of a collapsed building in northwest Syria.
When she was rescued from under the rubble, baby Aya, meaning miracle in Arabic, was still connected to her mother through her umbilical cord.
The newborn’s mother, father, and four siblings were killed after the quake hit the town of Jindayris.
“She arrived on Monday in such a sorry state, she had bumps, bruises, and she was cold and barely breathing,” said Hani Marouf, the pediatrician looking after the newborn. He said that she was now in stable condition.

Videos of the newborn baby rescue went viral on social media, and footage showed a man sprinting from the collapsed debris of the building, holding the baby covered in dust.
Khalil al-Suwadi, who was a distant relative of the baby girl, was there when she was retrieved, brought the newborn to Dr Marouf in Afrin, a Syrian city in the northwest of the country.

“I would like to adopt her and give her a decent life,” said one person.
A Kuwaiti TV anchor announced: “I am ready to take care of and adopt this kid… if legal procedures allow me to.”
The hospital manager, Khalid Attiah, said that he has received dozens of calls from people worldwide wishing to adopt Aya.
Dr Attiah, who has a daughter about four months older than her, said he won’t allow anyone to adopt her now. Until her distant family returns, I treat her like one of my own.
For now, he said his wife was breastfeeding her alongside their daughter
In Aya’s hometown of Jindayris, people had been searching through collapsed buildings for loved ones.
