DUBAI: Syrian air defenses on Friday shot down two drones in Damascus, state media reported.

The media cited a military source as saying the drones came from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights to the west of the Syrian capital.

The Israeli military has not commented on the reports so far.

Earlier, Syrian state media reported that the air defenses responded to hostile targets near Damascus.

Since December, Israeli strikes have killed more than half a dozen Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, including a top intelligence general stationed in Syria.

The US military carried out airstrikes in Syria and Iraq earlier this month against more than 85 targets linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and the groups it backs in retaliation for an attack in Jordan that killed three US troops in January.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have suffered one of their most tough spells in Syria since arriving a decade ago to help President Bashar Assad in the Syrian war as the US and Israel carried out strikes against Iran-backed groups in the country.

The western media that the Guards had pulled out some of their senior officers due the American attacks.

Iran’s ambassador to Syria said had stated that Iran remained present in Syria. Iran’s foreign minister is expected in Lebanon and then Damascus early next week for discussions with top officials.
