Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus held a meeting with Assad in Damascus on Sunday to discuss the response to the earthquake which has killed over 33,000 people in Syria and Turkiye.

The WHO chief said that the compounding crises of conflict, economic decline, Covid, cholera, and now the quake had taken an unbearable toll.

The situation is dire in the rebel-controlled area in the northwest parts of Syria, which cannot receive aid from government-controlled areas of the country without Assad’s authorization.
