ISLAMABAD: Syrian President Bashar Al Assad visited the Aleppo University Hospital on Friday, Reuters reported.

The office of Bashar al-Assad also shared images of Syrian President and his wife visiting wounded in the hospital.

Bashar al-Assad also held a meeting with rescue workers at quake hit areas in government-held Aleppo, Syrian TV reported.

Bashar al-Assad has been shown on Syrian state run TV meeting with rescue workers in Aleppo. It is Syrian president’s first public visit to earthquake affected area.

The Syrian civil defence said that the situation in northwest parts of Syria is “absolutely catastrophic”.

The first convoy of assistance crossed into Syria on Thursday following damage to road infrastructure meant it had been closed since the quake hit on Monday.

Reports said that the second UN relief convoy for victims of the quake in Syria has also arrived at the crossing point from Turkey.

Many parts of Aleppo were destroyed in civil war before it was recaptured by Assad’s forces in late 2016.

The war began in 2011 when an uprising against Assad’s regime led to a brutal crackdown.

This prompted even more protest demonstrations, which eventually spiralled into a full-scale war that destroyed many cities in Syria, left millions of people displaced and dead thousands.

The Assad’s government has been subject to world sanctions and is accused of committing war crimes in Syria.
