Syria’s President Meets Arab Parliamentarians in Damascus

DAMASCUS: A high level delegation of Arab parliamentarians met with Syria’s President Bashar Assad in Damascus on Sunday, local media reported.

According to Arab news it is another sign of warming relations following over a decade of isolation over the war in Syria. Arab parliamentarians from Iraq, Jordan, Palestine, Libya, Egypt, UAE, Lebanon and Oman and Lebanon visited Syria. The top legislators held meeting with Syrian President, Syrian official news agency SANA reported.

Arab Parliamentarians in Damascus

Speaker of Iraq’s Parliament Mohammed Halbousi said that Syria and Arab world are incomplete without each other and hoped that Damascus will join Arab environment soon. Damascus was isolated from the Arab world after Assad’s deadly crackdown against protest demonstration that erupted against his government in 2011. The membership of Syria was also suspended by Arab League in 2011.

However, many Arab countries including Saudi Arabia and the UAE provided aid and relief to Syria after quake on Feb. 6.

The Arab parliamentarians’ trip follows a summit in Baghdad, Iraq that acknowledged the Arab League’s intention of having Damascus return to the forum despite the war.
