TAIPEI: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), along with its local partners, unveiled plans on Tuesday to construct a second foundry in Japan, just weeks ahead of the official opening of its first facility in the country.

As a global semiconductor powerhouse with clients like Apple and Nvidia, TSMC commands over half of the world’s silicon wafer production, crucial components utilized in a wide array of products ranging from smartphones to automobiles and defense systems.

According to TSMC’s statement released jointly with Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation, DENSO, and Toyota, the new factory is slated to commence operations by the end of 2027.

The statement further highlighted that in addition to the second facility, the overall investment in Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM), TSMC’s majority-owned subsidiary in Kumamoto prefecture, will exceed US$20 billion with substantial support from the Japanese government.

The joint venture, JASM, is set to bolster its manufacturing capabilities with the initiation of construction for the second fab by the end of 2024 in response to escalating customer demand. The expansion is anticipated to enhance the overall cost structure and supply chain efficiency for JASM, the companies added.
