TAIPEI, Taiwan: As a result of escalating military pressure from China, Taiwan conducted missile drills on Tuesday to enhance its defence capabilities.
The exercises took place at the Jiupeng base in Pingtung County, where Taiwan’s military fired domestically produced Sky Bow III missiles and US made Patriot II missiles.
The drills, aimed at simulating the interception of enemy aircraft and missiles, marked the first time in over a decade that reporters were allowed access to this sensitive testing site.
According to defence ministry spokesman Sun Li-fang, the successful missile launches demonstrated the solid training and readiness of Taiwan’s forces. The exercises are part of Taiwan’s broader strategy to strengthen its military, which includes significant investments in advanced weaponry and defence reforms.
Taiwan’s military leadership emphasized their commitment to defending the island’s airspace and sovereignty against potential threats. The drills occurred as Taiwan’s defence ministry reported increased Chinese military activity around the island, including the presence of five Chinese aircraft and 11 naval vessels within a 24-hour period.
